(Rome, NY) The Rome Indians were held to only three runs over 21 innings, as the Schenectady Mohawks swept the Rome Indians in an NYCBL doubleheader.
Schenectady cruised to a 9-1 win in the opener, before taking a come-from-behind 4-2 12-inning win in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Indians had numerous opportunities early in the game but were unable to capitalize. Rome stranded three runners at third base within the first five innings.
Erin Jones (2-0) pitched a complete game to earn the win for the Mohawks. He scattered six hits in the effort.
Blake Wyatt (1-1) suffered the loss, going six innings for the Indians. Wyatt allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out an impressive 11 batters.
The second game is one the Indians will definitely want back as the team let one slip through their grasp.
Leading 2-1 in the top of the eighth, David Rodriguez was plowing through the Schenectady lineup. With two out and nobody on, Rodriguez was able to strikeout Matt Griffiths, but the ball hit home plate and went past catcher Kyle Mihalski allowing Griffiths to reach first and kept the inning going.
Schenectady would take advantage of this fortunate break.
Griffiths stole second and then came in to tie the game on a J.J. Yant RBI single.
In extra innings the Indians had a golden chance to win the game but could not take advantage. Rome loaded the bases in the 11th with no outs but could not score.
Schenectady then took the lead in the 12th on an RBI double by Bryan Spamer and a sacrifice fly by Matt Crudo to make it 4-2.
The Indians were held to only four hits in the second game, with none going for extra bases.
Rome returns to action Wednesday night when they host Watertown at 7pm.
