About the Rome Indians
by Jeff Delutis
The Rome Indians Baseball Team, Inc. is a non-for-profit
501(c)(3) organization that my father, Larry DeLutis gave 36 years to
as a player, coach and owner. The team exists to help foster the dreams
of those collegiate level baseball players who one day hope to play
on the professional level. After winning many championships in various
other leagues over the years, the 2001 Rome Indians Baseball Team won
its first NYCBL Championship since entering the league in 1986.
The Rome Indians play in the New York Collegiate Baseball
League (NYCBL) which is one of ten such summer leagues around the country
sanctioned by Major League Baseball and the NCAA. These leagues are
designed to assist collegiate level athletes in developing their skills,
while allowing them to gain exposure to Major League scouts during the
summer. Many former NYCBL alumni have gone on to play at the Major League
Level. Rome’s own Archi Cianfracco played for the San Diego Padres.
The NYCBL consists of eight teams located throughout New
York State. The season begins in early June and concludes no later than
July 31st. There is a 40-game schedule plus an all-star game and playoffs.
Members of our team come from all over the country as
well as locally. The roster consists of the very best collegiate baseball
players from around the country. The team provides housing and summer
employment for the players. Home games are played at the Larry DeLutis
Field at Griffiss Business & Technology Park. Collegiate level coaches
coach the team.
Each summer the Rome Indians' team, along with the Rome
Baseball Association, Inc. run baseball camps for the area's youth at
the Indians' playing facility. It is our goal to provide a positive
atmosphere for the athletes that play for us while providing enjoyable
and inexpensive entertainment for the citizens of Rome and surrounding
communities.
